Most of us have figured out that students’ emotions affect how well or poorly they learn. Good tutors tend to focus on those emotions and help students move from negative mind sets to positive ones, from feelings of failure to success.

According to Anne Murphy Paul’s brilliant report computerized teaching systems are : doing the same. In the everyday world of school, it is is helpful to see we can use these studies, particularly when we are working one-to-one with students to help them. Note that the important emotions for learning are: curiosity, delight, flow, engagement, confusion, frustration and boredom.

Check out this post from Annie Murphy Paul and tune into your students .http://anniemurphypaul.com/2014/09/the-feeling-of-learning/?utm_source=Brilliant%3A+The+New+Science+of+Smart+Newsletter&utm_campaign=de0c057187-Brilliant_Report_16_1_2012&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_9c734401c1-de0c057187-311811137#

It’s great that there are alternatives for when a teacher, librarian, or tutor can’t be there, but I always feel that an aware person
can do a better job than a set of algorithms. A human caring connection makes more of an impact. Do you agree?

How good are you at curating?

Cathy Evans, Dorcas Hand, Robyn Martin, and David Wee wrote this highly informative article for Independent Schools the journal of the National Association of Independent Schools, describing curating as Trailblazing. It’s worth paying attention to their distinction between curating and collecting. Save their ” Curation Assessment Criteria” for your own use. It’s succinct and not only will it help focus your curations, it also is available and suggested for you to share with students when they do their own curation project.

The value of having students do these projects is explained in the section on “Curation, Learning, and Citizenship.” I think you will find this to be an excellent resource. Check out the article at http://www.nais.org/Magazines-Newsletters/ISMagazine/Pages/The-Trailblazers.aspx

Here is a poetry project that’s already up and running and will connect your students to others from around the world http://langwitches.org/blog/2014/08/31/global-project-visualize-poetry-around-the-world/

Thanks to Laura Hnatiuk who posted this in the Saskatchewan School Library Association Facebook page. (She posts there regularly and has uncovered some wonderful links).

Are you thinking globally? We know your library goes beyond its walls — but is it going beyond borders. If students are to successfully compete in a world culture, they need to have a personal understanding of people from many different places and learn to accept diverse cultures and thinking. You can start them on their way.

What do you think

We spend a lot of time trying to make computers think like humans, but as Annie Murphy Paul suggests, it’s also important for us to understand how computers “think.” Just as we can’t wait until high school to teach information literacy, students need to learn early about the underlying concepts of how computers work and not have to be taking Computer Science to begin learning it. This kinetic approach should also “rewire” brains in a good way

If you are not subscribing to Annie Murphy Paul’s “The Brilliant Report” this is a good introduction to it. She’s worth adding to your regular reading.
